Barbara has always loved animals. Even before she wrote her first book, she had a deep connection with creatures both wild and domestic. She’s had dogs, cats, birds, and rabbits throughout her life, and each one has held a special place in her heart.
While living on the Oregon coast, Barbara volunteered at a bird and marine mammal center, caring for baby seals, puffins, fawns, a coyote cub, owlets, a pelican, and even a bear cub. She’s always looked for ways to connect with animals. The bonds she developed with these animals are something she’s cherished throughout her life.
When writing Sweetie Petey Finds a Friend, Barbara wanted a word that truly expressed the deep connection between people and animals. When she couldn’t find one in English, she turned to a Native American (Lakota) friend. This friend taught her the word tecihila. For Barbara, this word perfectly captures the soulful connection she and so many others share with animals.
Today, Barbara is a retired teacher and avid reader. She shares her love of animals with her son and currently lives on the California coast with her husband, who has two horses. Together, they also care for two beloved house bunnies.
